Six reasons

Why the January
intake makes sense

These are the reasons thousands of Indian students choose a January start every year.

๐Ÿ“‰
Lower competition
Thousands of applications land on the same course in September. The January window is smaller, so the chances of an offer on the same profile are better.
โฑ๏ธ
No gap year
Graduated in June and missed September? Taking the January intake means only 5โ€“6 months of productive preparation time, not an entire year.
โšก
Faster offers
Admissions teams carry a lighter load, so decisions come through faster โ€” often a conditional offer within 7โ€“10 days.
๐Ÿ†
Scholarship chances
Merit scholarships run across both intakes, and with fewer applicants in January, eligible students face lighter competition.
๐Ÿ
Easier accommodation
Good student housing fills up quickly during the September rush. January arrivals get better options at more reasonable rent.
๐Ÿ›‚
Comfortable visa slots
Peak visa season runs from August to September. Filing for January means relaxed appointment availability and processing.

3 common misconceptions
about the January intake

"A January intake degree is worth less"

The degree certificate never mentions the intake month. You receive the same credits, the same modules and the same award as the September batch. Employers look at the university and course, not the intake.

"Only a few courses are open in January"

This is only half true. Not every course runs in January, but popular fields such as Business, Data Science, Computing, Cyber Security, Finance, Public Health and Engineering have multiple versions available โ€” the list is updated every year.

"You miss the placement season"

The January batch completes a large part of its coursework by summer, opening up a window for summer internships. Hiring cycles vary by sector, so this is worth discussing when choosing a course.

A quick note: the ~40% fewer applications figure above is a general observation of UK university intake patterns, not a guarantee. The actual competition for your specific course is shared university-by-university on your counselling call.

January intake โ€” your questions

Is the January intake considered a "second choice"?
No. For the university, it's simply the second semester start date. The degree certificate never states the intake month โ€” the course, credits and duration are identical to the September batch.
Is admission easier in January?
Applications are fewer, so the chances of an offer on the same profile are often better. Seats are also fewer, though, so applying early still matters.
Does the January batch also get a post-study work visa?
Yes. The Graduate Route visa is granted on successful completion of the course โ€” 2 years (3 years for a PhD) โ€” regardless of intake.
Does it affect placements and internships?
The January batch completes a large part of its coursework by the summer break, which opens up a window for summer internships. Hiring cycles vary by sector, so this is worth discussing when choosing a course.
I was planning for September 2026 โ€” should I switch?
If your documents or funds won't be ready in time for September, January 2027 is a better option than taking a gap year. On a free counselling call, we can compare the cost and timeline for both options.
